About Hypnosis

Research on the use of hypnosis in disease management.

HypnotherapyHypnosis is a relaxing, naturally occurring state of mind. We experience it every day. Each time we read a captivating novel, float off in a daydream or see an engrossing movie we are in a natural state of hypnosis. Hypnosis enhances four important abilities: access to memories, feelings, thoughts, and problem-solving skills. Hypnosis can be traced back over three thousand years to sleeping temples in ancient Egypt. Modern hypnosis can help people overcome smoking habits, overeating, fears, pain, even warts. Hypnosis can also be used to enhance careers, improve academic performance, reduce sexual inhibitions, build self-esteem, attract abundance, and activate forgiveness and release of negative memories and emotions. Everything we experience is filtered through the rocky terrain of the conscious mind. Here we analyze every fact or event to see if it matches our own expectations and beliefs.

This mental process allows us to choose our reality and our thoughts. Hypnosis allows us to access the deep ocean of our subconscious where our long term memory, emotions and creativity reside. Wholeness and peace of mind come when the two aspects of our mind-conscious and subconscious-are in balance and working together.

Hypnosis is one of the most effective ways to find and release undesired habits and to build on your innate talents. If you want to Stop Smoking, Lose Weight, Improve Memory or Performance, Speed the Healing Process, Reduce Stress or just find out how to release anger and be happier, Hypnosis can help you achieve your goals.

People often ask me what types of things hypnosis can help improve, change or fix. I often say that it would be easier to describe the things that can't be helped with hypnosis.  Here is a laundry list and it is not complete. Hypnosis is not the magic pill for everything that ails you, but it is a powerful tool that can support you when you want to make changes in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be hypnotized?

Some people wonder if they can be hypnotized. Because hypnosis is a natural state of awareness anyone of normal intelligence can be hypnotized if they want to be.  You can be hypnotized only if you want to go into hypnosis and willingly follow the hypnotist's instructions.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, you can never stay permanently hypnotized because you are in control at all times and can emerge yourself if you chose to.

Could I be influenced to do something against my will?
No.  You are always aware of the suggestions given to you. You won't do or say anything that you find unacceptable. When you are in hypnosis you are aware of everything that is said and you are not unconscious.  Instead, you are deeply relaxed and very mind is very focused, much more so than when in a normal state.  You are able to hear and respond and actively participate in the session.  The hypnotist does not possess any type of power over a person. Your hypnotist is a guide, and you can choose to follow that guidance or choose not to follow that guidance

Will it work for me?
If you like the suggestions given and hold the right mental attitude, the critical factor in your conscious mind will allow the suggestions to be planted in your subconscious mind.   All of your automatic reactions, beliefs, habits and emotions live in your subconscious mind.   If you accept the suggestions given to you while in hypnosis, then you reprogram your subconscious to accept these changes.

The subconscious mind operates just like a computer in the sense that it must respond to what enters into it.  If at some time during our past our subconscious mind was led to believe that we needed to be fat, we became fat.  If it was led to believe that cigarettes made us stronger, sexier or more mature, we began to smoke.  With hypnosis, we access that internal computer and change those old subconscious perceptions.  When we do that, our responses, behaviors and feelings change.

Most of us have habits or feelings we've tried to change but nothing we do seems to make much difference.  We know how we want to act and how we want to feel and yet will power hasn't been able to make a lasting change.  Even when we've consciously been working hard to make the change there's still something deep inside us that just won't let it happen.  Hypnosis lets you change those inner feelings so your conscious mind and subconscious mind are in agreement.

In that way when the once overweight person is faced with food, they find that the old inner emptiness has been replaced with a feeling of fullness, and a natural focus on more important things.  The person that used to smoke simply doesn't think about cigarettes anymore.  And when they see someone else smoke, it just makes them feel good that they don't do that anymore.  Because hypnosis can reprogram our subconscious feelings, beliefs, attitudes and motivations, the changes are immediate and lasting.  This is why hypnosis is becoming so popular.
Shifting Consciousness

In hypnosis we talk about shifting consciousness, or accessing an altered state of consciousness. Let me start out by stating that your brain is only part of your mind or consciousness. That's what I think. Scientists and philosophers can't even come up with a concise definition of consciousness. But that doesn't mean that it isn't real or important. In fact I think that its importance is why they can't agree. Here is a definition from Wikipedia that describes altered state of consciousness. "An altered state of consciousness is any state which is significantly different from a normative waking beta wave state. The expression was coined by Carlos Castaneda and describes induced changes in one's mental state, almost always temporary.
Brain Wave ChartA synonymous phrase is "altered states of awareness". An altered state of consciousness can come about accidentally through indigestion, fever, sleep deprivation, starvation, oxygen deprivation, nitrogen narcosis (deep diving), or a traumatic accident. It can sometimes be reached intentionally by the use of a sensory deprivation tank or mind-control techniques, hypnosis, meditation, prayer, or disciplines (e.g. Mantra Meditation, Yoga, Sufism or Surat Shabda Yoga). It is sometimes attained through the ingestion of psychoactive drugs. Naturally occurring altered states of consciousness include dreams, lucid dreams, euphoria, ecstasy, psychosis as well as purported premonitions, out-of-body experiences, and channeling."
